The action-packed trailer for the “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” just dropped and it was worth the wait.
The film pairs the unlikely duo of Dwayne Johnson’s former US Security Service Agent Luke Hobbs with Jason Statham’s ex-MI6 Agent Deckard Shaw in a buddy/action/comedy thrill ride. The stakes are higher than ever, and the trailer shows the unlikely team being tasked with saving the world (Hobb’s 4th time) and puts them on a collision course with Idris Elba’s international terrorist Brixton.
The recent Fast and Furious entries have been more excessive than the original, but this movie seems to have gotten a double-dose of NOS. Brixton appears to be indestructible and says as much in the trailer: “I’m dealing with the future of the planet. I’m the necessary shock to the system. I am human evolutionary change — bulletproof, superhuman.” Over-the-top? Sure, but who are we kidding, this franchise’s strength was never its subtly. I get that superhero movies are all the rage these days, but does anyone remember when this franchise was just a Point Break with street racing knock off?
Hobbs and Shaw take the bad-assery to level 11, and the trailer shows just the right amount of James Bond and buddy comedy to make us wish the movie had a spring release date.
Balancing out the macho leads is “The Crown’s” Vanessa Kirby, who plays Shaw’s sister Hattie, an MI5 agent. She steals plenty of scenes from the titular heroes.
Hobbs describes himself with a line that we feel aptly describes how we feel about this Trailer: “I’m what ya call a nice cold can of whup ass.”
Hobbs & Shaw opens August 2, 2019.
