Lady Gaga, recently nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song for the 2019 Oscars, took a few minutes from her Las Vegas show over the weekend to send a message to Vice-President Mike Pence and his wife on LGBTQ rights.
While performing her hit song “Million Reasons” in front of over 5,000 fans, Lady Gaga defended the LGBTQ community, addressing the VP of the United States directly, saying “To Mike Pence, who thinks its acceptable that his wife work at a school that bans LGBTQ, you are wrong. You say we should not discriminate against Christianity. You are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian.”
Lady Gaga has been an avid supporter of gay rights since early in her career, and was addressing recent news that Karen Pence returned to teaching art at an evangelical Christian school in north Virginia that explicitly bans LGBTQ employees and students.
While sitting at a piano in MGM’s Park Theater, Lady Gaga continued, “I am a Christian woman, and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice, and everybody is welcome. So you can take all that disgrace, Mr. Pence, and you can look yourself in the mirror, and you’ll find it right there.”
Mike Pence had responded to the recent publicity regarding his wife’s employment with the anti-LGBTQ school, saying he finds it “deeply offensive” to see “major news organizations attacking Christian education.”
Over the last few years, support for the LGBTQ community has continued to grow and Lady Gaga has been one of its loudest spokespersons. Unfortunately, Mr. and Mrs. Pence’s views on the LGBTQ community are antiquated, and we can only hope that a more socially progressive voice is heard in the upcoming election.
