Official List of State Abbreviations

The Postal Service implemented the ZIP code and accompanying state code system in 1963. Since then, the two-letter abbreviations for each state have steadily gained popularity. Today, whenever an address is written, the state is almost always indicated with the two-letter abbreviation.
