Songs, spoken word and Psalm 150 with Jade and Julia (Water night, about 19:26, 20:23)

Empty out and open up: humility as the doorway to love, practised where love is hardest.

What Sam carried

Sam turned the whole field into a choir. He taught the parts himself, and by the end of Get Low the room was singing his surrender back to him: "Empty out and open up, Holy Spirit come," then "I am open to change for the better." Angel had asked him what the love dimension means, and his answer was a harder question: where can I love when it's the hardest to love? He called the festival the training ground, and said that to be a light in the dark we carry the dark within the light. In his spoken poem he found himself woven into earth and heaven, surely not alone, and asked the only question gratitude leaves: "who the heaven do I make the check out to?"

In their own words

“Empty out and open up, Holy Spirit come”

“I am open to change. I am open to being rearranged. I am open to change. I am open to change for the better.”

“And where my sea meets your sea meets seas of every living soul, I am overcome by the knowing that I am surely not alone.”

“We hold a vision of ourselves as being a light in the dark, right? And that's beautiful. But what it takes to be a light in the dark is to carry the dark within the light.”

“Angel asked me before this festival, what does the love dimension mean? What am I bringing to that? And I realized that a lot of my attention around love is, where can I love when it's the hardest to love?”

“So the question is not whether I should pay my gratitude, but rather, who the heaven do I make the check out to?”
