Derek played after the stages went quiet. Friday night at SolarPunk Summit ran on into Saturday’s dawn, and at the big fire he sat on a low bench beside Ben Holt, a classical guitar across his knees and a capo on the neck, while Ben kept time on the djembe.

The two of them sang through a long song with the flames in front of them and a ring of blanket-wrapped listeners around them, and closed on a laughing freestyle about the crew still awake at the fire. No stage, no announcement: music made in the circle, for the circle.

His name, he says, stands for Always Be True, and that is what we heard. On his own stages he loops bass, banjo, guitar, beats and voice into a one-man jam band, and through his academy he helps other musicians finish the songs they have been carrying for years.

If you have a song you have never finished, Derek is a guide for that. If you just want to dance, book the set.
