The Best Light Beers for Summer

Summer has finally arrived, which means it’s time to trade in those sweaters and pants for tank tops and shorts. Long sunny days are meant for bbq’s, boating, beaches and ice cold beer. The problem is, beer’s liquid calories can add up quickly and leave you feeling puffy and soft.

But not all beers are the same. Light beer was invented back in 1967, and just like today, it was designed to have fewer calories and a lower alcohol content than it’s full-bodied brothers. This makes light beer the perfect companion for a long afternoon in the sun.

If you’re trying to keep the body beach-ready, bring one of these light beers to your next summer festivity.

1.   Bud Light (12 oz)

Calories: 110

Alcohol by Volume: 4.2%

Carbs 6.6g

Even as microbrews have grown in popularity, Bud Light still dominates the market, selling more than any other beer in the US. Beer snobs may squabble over the taste, but one thing can’t be denied is that it’s easy to drink. It’s on tap almost everywhere and the low price will leave you with a little extra cash for the brats and burgers.

2.   Miller Lite (12 oz)

Calories: 96

Alcohol by Volume: 4.2%

Carbs: 3.2g

Miller Lite may not be as popular as Budlight, but it was the original “light beer.” Introduced in 1973, Miller Lite started the “diet beer” trend and opened the door for many of the other beers on this list. Unlike Bud Light, Miller Lite is a light pale lager that is often praised for its flavor, and it won the 2016 Gold Award in the World Beer Cup for the light lager category.

3.   Michelob Ultra (12 oz)

Calories: 95

Alcohol by Volume: 4.2%

Carbs: 2.6g

Michelob Ultra markets itself as the beer of choice for people into fitness, featuring athletes and celebrities like Lance Armstrong and a buffed-up Chris Pratt in their ads. While it is a “low-carb beer”, calorie counters are often surprised to see that it has basically the same number of calories as many other light beers. Unless you’re drinking for show, there are tastier light-beer options.

4.   Coors Light (12 oz)

Calories: 102

Alcohol by Volume: 4.2%

Carbs: 5g

Coors brewery has been around for nearly 150 years, and they get kudos for Coors Light having 60 calories less than it’s full-bodied brother. To their credit, it is nice to know if a beer has been in the sun to long.

5.   Corona Light (12 oz)

Calories: 99

Alcohol by Volume: 4.5%

Carbs: 5g

Corona Light may be number 5 on this list, but it’s number 1 in our hearts. No light beer embraces the summer vibe more than Corona Light. While most enjoy it with a lime, this wonderful import from Mexico is just as good straight out of the bottle.

6.   Bud Select 55 (12 oz)

Calories: 55

Alcohol by Volume: 2.4%

Carbs: 1.8g

If you like the taste of flavored water, then this Bud’s for you. 55 calories may be great for your waistline, but it’s decidedly worse for your tastebuds. 7.   MGD 64

Calories: 64

Alcohol by Volume: 2.8%

Carbs: 2.4g

The Miller brewing company was not going to be outdone by Budweiser’s Select 55, and they created their own version of flavored-water-light-beer. MGD 64 is a good beer for people who don’t like beer. It’s light on taste, light on calories, and light on alcohol.

8.   Busch Light

Carbs: 3.2g

Picture this. You’re trying to shed a few pounds, the summer sun has got you parched, and you don’t get paid until next week. What do you do? It has one of the lowest calorie counts of all light beers, and a 6-pack will cost you less than $5.00.

9.   Natural Light

Calories: 95
