The Hundred-Day Question
“Your future self, one hundred days from now, is looking back. What was the biggest shift that caused even more openness, expansion, abundance, creativity, flow, love?”
Most questions about the future ask you to hope, and hope keeps a polite distance from the present, but this one asks your future self to describe something that already happened, and description carries a different kind of knowing, because an answer has to get specific enough to have actually occurred. I ask this question in rooms and I answer it myself, it has been asked of me by people I trust, and it works the same way in both directions, which is how I know it is a real instrument.
if the answer that surfaces feels small, let it be small, because in my experience the trajectory rarely changes through giant leaps, it changes through those little two-millimeter shifts that bring the course closer to the North Star.
Goal, Or Is It Happening?
“Is that a goal, or is it happening?”
I listen closely to the words a commitment wears, because a goal can live safely out ahead of a person for years, admired and unthreatened, while a thing that is happening has already entered the body and the calendar, and carries a next step with a date on it. The question simply invites your own language to tell the truth about which one you are holding, and the language almost always knows before you do.
the moment the question lands, I follow it with the release, you don't have to. That release is the whole test, because a commitment has to survive an open door to count as a want, and anything that only holds under pressure was a should all along, and should, in my house, is a four-letter word.
Test the Floor
“If the thing you are afraid of actually happened, where is your next meal coming from, where are you living in three months, and where are you standing in six?”
Fear does its best work in the dark, so I walk the floor with the lights on, meal by meal, month by month, until the imagined constraint has to show itself in specifics, and specifics are almost always survivable, overhead can shrink, location can change, help can be asked for. What remains standing after the walk is preference, and preference has dignity, which is why the sentence "I lack security" so often turns out to be "I have a life I love and I am choosing to fund it," the same facts held by a different author. If you are living with a fear that hums all day underneath everything, this is the gentlest question on this page, because the floor is nearly always closer, and softer, than the fall you have been bracing for.
nothing has to change after you look, because the looking is the practice.
What Already Exists?
“Before we build anything new, what already exists?”
Two blocks look identical from the outside, in one the work truly does not exist yet and needs a rhythm and a container, and in the other the work already exists, sitting finished in a drawer, a hard drive, a decade of quiet practice, while its maker reports having nothing, and those two conditions need opposite medicine. Prescribing more production to someone in the second condition buries them under more unrecognized output, so I take inventory before I take aim. I know this one from the inside, my desire was to capture the magic moments of this life, and capture was never my problem, my block was shipping and sharing them with the people who were part of them, and naming that honestly changed what I built next. If you are exhausted and certain you have nothing to show for your years, this question is especially yours, because the inventory is almost always fuller than the ache reports.
you do not have to do anything with what you find, because the seeing is itself the shift, and any building that comes after gets to start from abundance.
What If You Are Already Stable?
“What if we already are financially stable, and what we're desiring is that 10x, 100x, 1000x future that just thrives?”
Scarcity often lives in a measurement error rather than a resource gap, because most of us count one account and call it our life, when the assets are all assets, one totality, the whole picture plus cash flow, positive or negative. Correct the category and the feeling can dissolve without a single dollar arriving, which tells you the feeling was never really about the dollars. And I keep this one in the form of a question on purpose, because a verdict invites defense while a what-if leaves the pen in your hand, and that is the teaching underneath the whole page, authority is authorship, the life gets authored by whoever is holding the pen.
expect to run this one more than once, measurement habits reassert themselves quietly, and re-running the question is maintenance, the way tuning an instrument is maintenance, and never a sign that it failed.
The Three-Minute Audit
“Say the problem out loud, keep talking for three minutes, and then ask yourself, does everything I just said agree with my opening line?”
The first answer anyone gives, me included, is a hypothesis, and in my experience the next three minutes of a person's own speaking usually argue with their opening sentence, the stated constraint on one side and the lived evidence quietly stacking up on the other. The gap between those two is where the real conversation lives, and you do not need me in the room to find it, you need only the patience to listen to yourself the way a good friend would, curious about the contradiction rather than embarrassed by it.
catching yourself mid-contradiction is simply information arriving, we all narrate faster than we innerstand, and the noticing means the innerstanding has already begun.
