Preston Rutherford, who creates as Honest Conscience, is an artist who moves what's dark and what's light through jazz-hip-hop freestyle, writing, and a surgical self-talk practice. Out of his own climb back from depression, he built Honest Conscience as a studio for giving the full spectrum of being human a place to live in the open.

We met through the podcast, and the conversation went somewhere I didn’t expect. He talked about climbing out of a college depression through freestyle and writing, giving the darkness a voice, because for him what doesn’t get expressed gets depressed. Then he laid out his self-talk practice: affirmations, binaural beats, his own recorded voice reprogramming the inner dialogue, the birth of what he calls Honest Conscience. And underneath it all, a frame I keep coming back to: that life is the limited edition, and constraint is what makes value possible. Constraint gives restraint, restraint gives priorities, priorities give values.
